Should you reward customers for reviews? Coupons, ethics and what is allowed

Rewarding reviews is legal and effective when the reward is for any honest review, not for a good one. How coupon rewards work, what the rules say, and how to set one up in minutes.

"Leave a review and get 10% off" is one of the most effective lines in small-business marketing. It is also one of the most misunderstood. Done one way it is a normal thank-you; done another it is illegal. This post draws the line clearly and shows how to run a reward that helps.

The rule in one sentence

You can reward customers for leaving a review. You cannot reward them for leaving a positive review.

Every major regulator and platform lands in the same place. A thank-you that applies to any honest review, regardless of rating, is an incentive to participate. A thank-you that depends on the rating is a purchase of a false endorsement.

What the regulators say

  • UK (CMA, DMCC Act 2024): incentivised reviews must be honest, and the incentive must not be conditional on the review being positive. Businesses must take reasonable steps to prevent fake or misleading reviews.
  • EU (Omnibus Directive): platforms must disclose whether reviews are verified and businesses must not present incentivised reviews as spontaneous.
  • US (FTC rule on fake reviews, 2024): it is unlawful to buy positive reviews or to condition an incentive on the review's sentiment. Disclosure of a material connection is required.

The pattern is consistent: reward the act, not the outcome, and be transparent about it.

Why rewards work (and when they do not)

A small coupon roughly doubles response rates to a cold ask in our experience. It works because it changes the framing from "do me a favour" to "we appreciate your time." It works less well when:

  • The reward is large enough to feel like payment. Keep it small: 10% off, a free coffee, free delivery on the next order.
  • The reward is only mentioned after the review. Announce it in the ask.
  • The reward arrives late or requires contacting support. Delivery must be automatic.

How coupon rewards work on Reeltic

  1. In your dashboard open Rewards and create a coupon offer: a code, a short description, and an optional expiry.
  2. The offer is shown on your public profile as a line like "Leave a review, get 10% off your next visit." The code itself is never shown publicly.
  3. When a customer's review is published, the reward is awarded automatically and delivered to the email or phone number they verified with.
  4. Each verified identity can earn a given offer once. Nobody can farm it with multiple reviews.
  5. The award is independent of the star rating. A two-star review earns the same coupon as a five-star one.

Rewards are on by default for new offers, so the moment you create one it is live. Pause it any time.

Wording that stays on the right side of the line

Good:

"Leave an honest 30-second video review and we will send you 10% off your next order. Any rating, any feedback."

Also good:

"We give every reviewer a free coffee to say thanks. Tell us what you really think."

Not good:

"Leave a 5-star review and get 10% off."

Not good:

"Show us your review for a discount." (This pressures customers to be positive in front of staff.)

Disclosure

Reeltic shows the reward offer on the business profile, so anyone reading reviews can see that reviewers may have received a thank-you. That transparency is what makes incentivised reviews acceptable. Do not try to hide it; it protects you.

Common questions

Can I reward only my best customers? Yes, but the reward still cannot depend on what they say.

Can I reward with cash? Legally yes in most places, but it reads as payment. A discount or product is better received.

Do rewarded reviews count toward badges? Yes. They are verified reviews like any other.

What if a customer leaves a bad review and asks for the coupon? They get it. That is the deal, and honouring it is exactly what makes your good reviews credible.
